From the Court to Chicken Salad Chick: A Family’s Bold Step into Franchising

For the Coffey family, doing life together has always meant chasing big dreams with an even bigger purpose. From professional basketball courts to motivational speaking and nonprofit work, their individual journeys are inspiring. But their latest chapter is a collective one, as they bring their shared vision, passion for community, and deep family bond to a brand they believe in: Chicken Salad Chick.

A Family Rooted in Strength and Purpose

Led by Richard Coffey, a former NBA player on the Minnesota Timberwolves, U.S. Army veteran, motivational speaker, and nonprofit officer, this powerhouse family brings a dynamic blend of talents and life experiences to the table. Richard and his business partner Sheba’s children Sydney, Nia, and Amir have each carved their own paths in sports, business, and service, but their common thread is clear: a drive to do meaningful work together.

Sheba, a Minnesota graduate and successful realtor, has also delivered a TED Talk.

Sydney and Nia both played basketball professionally overseas, with Sydney now working in pharmaceutical sales and Nia still active in the WNBA in her ninth season.

Amir, a Minnesota alum, is part of the LA Clippers organization.

Together, they form Core 5 Ventures, a family company dedicated to building generational wealth and creating opportunities to give back.

Why Chicken Salad Chick, and Why Minnesota?

For months, the Coffeys gathered to discuss ideas for creating a lasting family legacy. Franchising surfaced as a powerful way to do just that. When a close friend introduced them to Chicken Salad Chick, Sheba and Sydney, who live in Atlanta and knew the brand well, immediately sang its praises. The delicious food, the founder’s story, and the brand’s strong values resonated deeply.

After reaching out to Chicken Salad Chick’s team, they found the process smooth and supportive, especially thanks to Julie, franchise development manager, who guided them every step of the way. With no prior restaurant experience, they were drawn to the franchise’s operational support and team culture.

Minnesota was the natural choice for this family. With deep roots in the state and a well-connected family name, the Coffeys saw an incredible opportunity to grow the brand. They’re planning to open 10 locations throughout the Minneapolis area, starting with a location in the Maple Grove area.

Leading with Heart, Giving Back with Intention

This venture is about more than business. For the Coffeys, it’s a way to serve others. Their passions are many: fighting food insecurity, supporting single mothers and children, and helping eradicate sex trafficking, a cause especially close to Richard’s heart through his work in shelters.

They also see this as a chance to be role models in their communities. Sydney and Nia are especially excited to be at the forefront of this effort. The women-led nature of the business aligns perfectly with a growing movement in the state, and they’re proud to be part of it.

A Team Built on Trust, Faith, and Teamwork

The Coffey family believes that real success comes from knowing each other’s strengths, listening well, and staying united. Their sports backgrounds taught them discipline, time management, and the value of working together as a team.

Their parents instilled in them the mindset to never settle for average and to always dream big. This new venture is a continuation of that legacy. A way to do something extraordinary, together.

With faith, grit, and a deep love for one another and their community, the Coffeys are poised to make a major impact on Minnesota and beyond, one scoop at a time!
